Manual Installation¶
The default way to install the SDK is to run:
curl https://get.daml.com | sh
However, there are some contexts in which this is not the best option, such as when the machine you want to install the Daml SDK on does not have full access to the internet, or if you are not comfortable executing scripts directly from the internet.
This page covers two topics:
- Installing the SDK from a downloaded tarball.
- Verifying the integrity of a downloaded tarball.
Install the SDK from a Tarball¶
Tarballs for the Open Source Edition of the Daml SDK can be downloaded from GitHub; tarballs for the Enterprise Edition can be downloaded from Artifactory.
SDK tarballs bear the SDK version string. When installing from a tarball, you need to know both the SDK version string and the Daml version string. For stable releases up to and including 2.8.0, they are the same, but this may not always be the case in snapshots or later versions.
Once you have a tarball, extract it and run the install script (unless you chose the Windows installer, in which case double-click the installer icon). Supply the Daml version string using the --install-with-custom-version
flag. For example, for version 2.8.0:
tar xzf daml-sdk-2.8.0-macos.tar.gz
cd sdk-2.8.0
./install.sh --install-with-custom-version 2.8.0
Note that in the above command the SDK and Daml version strings are identical (2.8.0
), which may make it a bit trickier to see which is which. In the case of a snapshot, such as 2.8.0-snapshot.20231122.0, the SDK version string, 2.8.0-snapshot.20231118.12382.0.v86cb8054`, and the Daml version string, 2.8.0-snapshot.20231122.0
, differ. The commands would become:
tar xzf daml-sdk-2.8.0-snapshot.20231118.12382.0.v86cb8054-macos.tar.gz
cd sdk-2.8.0-snapshot.20231118.12382.0.v86cb8054
./install.sh --install-with-custom-version 2.8.0-snapshot.20231129.0
Just like for the standard installation procedure, you may want to add ~/.daml/bin
to your $PATH
.
Verify the Integrity of a Tarball¶
If you require a higher level of security, you can instead install the Daml SDK by manually downloading the compressed tarball, verifying its signature, extracting it and manually running the install script.
Note that the Windows installer is already signed (within the binary itself), and that signature is checked by Windows before starting it. Nevertheless, you can still follow the steps below to check its external signature file.
To do that:
Go to GitHub for the Open Source Edition, or Artifactory for the Enterprise Edition. In either case, confirm that your browser sees a valid certificate for the domain.
Find the appropriate release and note the release name. Stable releases have names like
2.8.0
. Snapshots have names like2.8.0-snapshot.20231129.0
.Download the artifact for your platform as well as the corresponding signature file, which has the same name with an added
.asc
at the end. For example, if you are on macOS and are looking at the Open Source Edition you would download the filesdaml-sdk-<...>-macos.tar.gz
anddaml-sdk-<...>-macos.tar.gz.asc
. On GitHub, the artifact and signature file are found in the Assets section, after the release notes.Note
You can safely ignore the version string in the tarball name – this is an internal version string that is superseded by the version you took note of in step 2. If you are installing a stable release, this internal version will be the same as the release version you took note of. If it is a snapshot, the
<...>
section will be different. For Windows you can choose between the tarball (ends in
.tar.gz
), which follows the same instructions as the Linux and macOS ones (but assumes you have a number of typical Unix tools installed), or the installer, which ends with.exe
. Regardless, the steps to verify the signature are the same.To verify the signature, you need to have
gpg
installed (see https://gnupg.org for more information on that) and the Digital Asset Security Public Key imported into your keychain. Once you havegpg
installed, you can import the key by running:gpg --keyserver hkp://pgp.mit.edu --search F26D8A0AADF666CCB28F2AB1650EC3253B6A8FF5
This should come back with a key belonging to
Digital Asset Holdings, LLC <security@digitalasset.com>
, created on 2023-01-10 and expiring on 2025-01-09. If any of those details are different, something is wrong. In that case please contact Digital Asset immediately.Alternatively, if keyservers do not work for you (we are having a bit of trouble getting them to work reliably for us), you can find the full public key at the bottom of this page.
Once the key is imported, you can ask
gpg
to verify that the file you have downloaded has indeed been signed by that key. Continuing with our example of 2.8.0 on macOS, you should have both files in the current directory and run:gpg --verify daml-sdk-2.8.0-macos.tar.gz.asc
and that should give you a result that looks like:
gpg: assuming signed data in 'daml-sdk-2.8.0-linux.tar.gz' gpg: Signature made Fri 15 Dec 2023 15:53:57 GMT gpg: using RSA key CADC3D1E3B5C4C5F94A65D78A7BF65AAADBBC494 gpg: Good signature from "Digital Asset Holdings, LLC <security@digitalasset.com>" [unknown] gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature! gpg: There is no indication that the signature belongs to the owner. Primary key fingerprint: F26D 8A0A ADF6 66CC B28F 2AB1 650E C325 3B6A 8FF5 Subkey fingerprint: CADC 3D1E 3B5C 4C5F 94A6 5D78 A7BF 65AA ADBB C494
Note: This warning means you have not told gnupg that you trust this key actually belongs to Digital Asset. The
[unknown]
tag next to the key has the same meaning:gpg
relies on a web of trust, and you have not told it how far you trust this key. Nevertheless, at this point you have verified that this is indeed the key that has been used to sign the archive.
To import the public key directly without relying on a keyserver, you can copy-paste the following Bash command:
gpg --import < <(cat <<EOF
